Do you long to live in a city like this? The picture itself is appetising, isn’t it? Living in a cosmopolitan city might sound good to hear but the real fun and frolic comes to the fore when you give it a serious thought. How would you feel if your city were to support twice its present population? Let us associate all this to a single familiar term- Urbanization.
The main reason for urbanization is the uncontrolled growth of population. Population rise is on exponential terms and it creates a strong sense of déjà vu in the people living in large cities. Actual problem arises when the bodies that protract the growth of cities themselves depict similar trends of urbanization. In developed countries where extensive farming is practised, it is commercially sustainable for a large scale farmer to go on with his agriculture. But, in a country like India where the condition of farmers is almost deplorable, it is hardly probable for a farmer to let his successor into the same stream. Even, the people undertaking farming right now find it hardly viable to continue. If this scenario continues, the world will head into a terrible state where people will have to drag themselves from pillar to post in search of food and fight for every crust of bread. The very thought is revolting.
Population restrain is the ultimate solution to this crisis. But, another technical way of dealing with this can be by setting up big firms which take up lands for farming and employ men similar to a BPO employing people. Even government can take up such a step by setting up a special organization that would itself be the investor and the manager. This ensures that the agriculture sector is better stabilized to the ups and downs of the market and hence a perpetual inflow of food.
I expect atleast one of my readers to turn into a venture capitalist and take up agriculture on large scale. Let us envisage a brighter future for our country and the world. And spread the word about population control . After all, I would never love my city with double the population and half the resources.
can you reason out why farmers find agriculture not viable???
ReplyDeleteFarmers in our country are very poor. They are the immediate victims of any climatic changes or any ups and downs in the market. They are very prone to any imbalances in the society. Moreover, the income they get from farming is very less. There are a million mechanical jobs that an uneducated farmer can do to earn the same income and have a much more peaceful life stable to external elements. So, farmers tend to be driven into different jobs. Moreover, education is becoming easily available in India nowadays. So, a farmer's son would get educated and work in intellectual areas rather than do farming. Hence, the succession is not maintained. Farming lands turn into either real estates or barren lands. Gradually, the number of farmers goes down. So does the area under agriculture. These depleting trends might someday take devastating turns. So, some quick action should be taken in order to prevent such a scenario.
ReplyDeleteas u suggested we need more BPOs. farmers need to be educated about what can actually be done so that the situation is not worsened. any ways its gud dat u brought out this issue.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean we need BPOs to educate farmers and assist them. I meant that there should be large firms which own lands, invest on it and employ farmers to work paying them regular salary. This ensures stabilization of the agricultural sector. For example, Reliance has its operations in various fields such as telecommunications, information technology, petroleum, power, etc; Similarly it can come into agricultural sector also. If it owns vast cultivable lands in all parts of the country, any unexpected loss in any place would not be a problem because there would be other places to compensate for the loss. The company would still pay the regular salary to the farmers employed. But, such a loss to a single farmer would be daunting upon him.
